An NPR Best Book of the Year, a June 2023 Indie Next Pick, and a 2024 Maine Literary Book Award winner for Fiction, The Road to Dalton is the 2024 One Book One Valley read. Twelve public libraries throughout the region along with White Birch Books will host the author of the book Shannon Bowring at the Majestic Theatre in Conway on Thursday, October 24, starting at 7 p.m. All are invited. The event is free of charge.
About the book
It’s 1990 in Dalton, Maine. Rose goes to work in the diner every day, hiding her bruises from her customers and her two young boys. At a table sits Dr. Haskell who looks back on his life, thinking about his choices, his wife, and her best friend. Trudy, his wife, and Bev have been ‘best friends’ for so long they have stopped counting - a fact accepted and ignored by both their husbands. And there is Greg, a young teen struggling to make sense of his feelings for his two friends.
These are just some of the characters who inhabit Dalton. After one unthinkable decision, the community is rocked to its core and left reeling. It’s in the aftermath, when everyone’s true natures are revealed, that Bowring really shows her deep understanding of small towns, where the private is also public.
